Welcome to Something Magical
If you have found this website you have done a little bit of magic.
Allow us to explain. You are most likely here because you have found one of our books in a library. Maybe you liked the book you read at the library and thought you would see if you could actually buy the book you saw. As far as we're concerned, that's magical.
For, you see, we print our books primarly to give away. We give most of them to libraries. And, occasionally we even sell one. So, if you would like to help support our bookish philanthropy by buying one, we would like to thank you very much. But, mostly, we want to thank you for supporting your local library.
The Magical Something
This is a children's book in the old fashioned way. It is a small book with big bright pictures each followed by a single page of story. It is meant to be shared between a child and an adult. But anyone, including most children, can read it by themselves if they wish. The book is a collaboration between the author and his child, who, at the time, was only four years old. He would draw, and paint and she would describe and point and laugh, sitting on his lap as he worked. Both the author and his daughter are now much older. But the story they created together is remembered here, in this little book. It has adventure, mystery, friendship, courage, and all those things that shape our lives. And, that we hope for. But most of all, we wish for you only, to fall in love with Sam, and the Girl in Blue and, of course, The King of the Wind and the Sky, just as that child of four did so long ago.
For that is what this book is really about.
Love.

Ziriel's Window Books was an idea made possible by the work of a few people working out of a house in Colorado. That's the front porch there in the picture. It's a good spot to spend time not working. At least in the summer. When we are working we are writing and photographing and painting and, well, you get the idea. We admit all this is not very original. Many people self publish. However, we think the ideas that produced the books we make are pretty original. But of course we do. They are our babies. And we love them. It is in the hope that you will love them too that we have adventured into printing them.
We also publish books for adults. Like these.
Sky, Mountain, Forest, Home
This is the story where all the other stories begin. At least for us at Ziriel's Window. It is where we started writing, and imagining, and, well, sharing our lives with others.
In 2001, seven years before Google if you can believe it, The Denver Post gave us the opportunity to share our lives, living off-grid in the Rocky Mountains with their new online readers. At a time when the internet was new and websites were a novelty, our editior decide we were "bloggers". Having no idea what a blogger was, we happily agreed to keep blogging. We called our online writing A Colorado Journal. We journaled there for eight years, writing about our lives living in the forest until the newspaper was destroyed by a hedge fund.
But the journal we kept endures long after the newspaper faded into, well, you know where newspapers are now.
This is that story. It is a special place where a vanishing wild place lives on. In our hearts.
Publication coming soon . . . perhaps very soon.
Campfire Stories
This particular book brings a very personal voice to some warm stories of our great American West through the eyes of one man who has come to know her well. And has fallen in love with her.The American West is unique in all of the world’s history. But, like all places in the human experience, it is diluted by cultural, cinematic and historical interpretations that have formed a mythic, vague yet rigid, impression of one of our nation’s stories.
Legends and lore. Text books and tales. Movies and TV and books. The pages of this book contain some of all of these. But, mostly, these are stories that carry the heart, and the solid rock, of a vanishing place. A place that was once where brave, true spirits wished to dwell. Not in a romantic, disconnected way. No. It is a place made of real people, who were so very much like us, who hoped and dreamed, loved, died, but are still remembered. Even if we now remember them only as stories. Perhaps that is what makes our stories so fundamental to our lives, even today, in the Great Plastic Electric Empire of this glittering 21st Century.
To all of you, who strive and hope and dream, this book is dedicated.

Four Years Past Forever
You can never know what to expect when fate hits you with a hammer. You may know what others tell, what books profess, what the popular wisdom is, but you will not really know until it happens to you. When the world you knew, the one you once lived in, found love in, had children, vetured into bravely, sang songs, were young, is gone. And you find yourself in a new world. One that is out of time with all you once knew. Where the ones you loved, the songs you sang, have passed away. And that life your life is over. This is a personal story of loss and grief. It is not a how-to about getting past that loss but, rather, a simple recounting of one man's journey - - four years past.
